Questions
What type of things do you teach?
I have four broad ranges within my teaching. They are:
1. Bass Guitar (all styles, all levels)
2. Guitar (Beginners & intermediate / electric & Acoustic)
3. Studio Skills (Production, arranging & writing ((I mainly use Pro Tools, although I do have a setup for Logic.)
4. Harmony and Theory (All styles, all levels, not instrument specific)
Where do you teach?
I teach from my home in Cuffley, which is just North of London. I can be reached easily by car (just off Junction 25 of the M25) or by train (Cuffley train station is about 30 minutes from Kings Cross / Old St or Highbury and Islington tubes)
When I take on new students, I send them a pdf with my address details and directions from the tube station to my house. If you are coming by car, I have a driveway that you can park in.
How much does a lesson cost?
My private lessons are £40 for one hour, or £70 for two hours.
What do I need to bring?
Ideally, you should bring your own instrument and any materials from which you are currently learning. (i.e. books, DVDs etc) If you have a difficult journey, you can always use one of my basses/guitars. It would be a good idea to get a folder to keep your lesson notes in.
I also recommend bringing a USB key drive. That way, we can exchange mp3s, pdfs and any other files you will have to work from in between lessons. If you are coming for studio and composition help, it is often easier to bring your laptop or a hard drive that we can work directly onto.
I’ve never had lessons before, what kind of thing should I expect?
We’ll sit down for an hour in my studio.
Initially, I’ll ask you to play something that you’re comfortable with – it could be something of your own or from a song that you know. By observing how you play, I can give initial help with basic technique, check for bad habits and advise in terms of posture, positioning and your physical relationship to your instrument.
We’ll chat a little about your history and the kind of music that you listen to, that you love and that you play. (These aren’t always the same thing
I can then work with you for the remaining time on achieving specific goals to help you to improve as a musician, prepare for an exam or audition or get ready for a gig, album or tour. In subsequent lessons, we will continue working on set pieces, exercises and projects to help you advance in whatever aspect of your musicianship you would like to improve.
